Caffeine has a bitter taste. The sports nutrition industry has traditionally tried to hide the bitter flavour of gels by adding flavours and acidity or simply by lowering the caffeine content. But added artificial flavours don’t help you go any faster – and you want to take in sufficient caffeine.
Hydrogel technology
So, Maurten decided to simply find a way around this problem. Using hydrogel technology, they built a biopolymer matrix dense enough to encapsulate both the caffeine and the carbohydrate mixture. The result: Gel 100 CAF 100 – a true GEL with low bitterness, low sweetness, effective caffeine content, and plenty of energy.
GEL 100 CAF 100
100 milligrams of caffeine is the equivalent of fifteen espressos or one cup of brewed coffee. That’s remarkably high compared with many of the traditional gels out there. It provides 25 grams of carbohydrates through a unique blend of fructose and glucose (ratio of 0.8:1) that allows absorption of up to 100 grams of carbohydrates per hour. It has a high weight to energy ratio and contains no added flavours, preservatives, or colourants. Like all Maurten products, it is vegan-friendly.
Pure
All batches of the GEL 100 are tested for doping substances indicated on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) prohibited substances list by an independent third party with laboratories in the United Kingdom and Germany.

Developing a nutritional strategy for races or key sessions is complex. Everyone is different, and the speed at which caffeine is absorbed and processed varies from person to person. Maximum caffeine concentration is generally reached within 60 minutes, but normally takes three to five hours to halve. There are two other important factors to consider: your body weight and whether you are used to caffeine. Scientific research recommends an intake of 3 mg of caffeine per kilogramme of body weight to improve performance. However, this does depend on the individual. We have developed some general guidelines for the use of the GEL 100 CAF 100, based on our own findings and scientific literature.
Duration < one hour
This strategy requires one serving of GEL 100 CAF 100.
A beneficial caffeine content can be achieved by consuming approximately 200 mg prior to activity. This can be achieved, for example, by drinking one cup of coffee in the hours before activity and one GEL 100 CAF 100 during your warm-up.
DURING:
No intake necessary.
Duration < two hours
This strategy requires two to three servings of GEL 100 CAF 100, depending on your body weight.
BEFORE:
Try to consume 200 mg caffeine before starting your activity. All you need to do is to simply consume two sachets of GEL 100 CAF 100. For an activity lasting about two hours, having one GEL 100 CAF 100 while warming up is a convenient way to build up caffeine levels and carbohydrate levels at the same time. Remember that one GEL 100 CAF 100 also contains 25 grams of carbohydrates.
DURING:
Take another GEL 100 CAF 100 approximately 30 minutes after starting your activity to ensure that you maintain your caffeine levels. Don’t forget to replenish the carbohydrates. Try to consume 30 to 60 grams of carbohydrates every hour.
Duration two to six hours
This strategy requires two to three servings of GEL 100 CAF 100, depending on your body weight.
BEFORE:
Consume 200 mg of caffeine during the hours preceding the activity.
DURING:
Take another GEL 100 CAF 100 approximately 30 minutes after starting your activity to ensure that you maintain your caffeine levels. Strive to consume one GEL 100 CAF 100 every second hour to maintain caffeine levels. Don’t forget to replenish your carbohydrates by using GEL 100, Drink Mix 160, or Drink Mix 320. We know it sounds ambitious, but aim for an intake of around 60 to 90 grams of carbohydrates per hour.
Guidelines
These guidelines have been simplified and should only be used as a rule of thumb. Caffeine is not the right substance to take for everyone. Consult a doctor if you are not sure or if you are pregnant. And always bear in mind that there is no point in increasing your caffeine intake. You can never compensate for training, and overconsumption won’t help you.
